Inpatient Therapy/Swing Bed Services provided at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital

by Julie Johanning, Physical Therapist Assistant

Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital’s Swing Bed program may be just what you are looking for. If you have an illness or have had a procedure that causes you to need extended rehab close to home, our Swing Bed program may be just for you.

The Swing Bed program is available for Medicare patients who typically undergo a short, three day hospital stay.  That patient may no longer medically qualify to remain in the hospital, but is still a step away from home-based care or recovery.  If the individual is already a patient at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, and is approved for the Swing Bed program, the patient typically stays in the same room and bed.

The swing bed program is federally approved for small rural hospitals.  It is a short term and temporary program with discharge options being explored starting the first day and throughout the entire stay.  The average length of stay is 7-10 days, however this varies based on progress and individual needs. Our swing bed team consists of physicians, nurses, social workers, case management, and therapy services.

What sets us apart from other local programs is that our rehabilitation team also offers other services such as modified barium swallow studies, VitalStim® (for swallowing difficulties), lymphedema treatment (for chronic swelling), vestibular rehab (for those who have vertigo), myofascial release (for those with limited range of motion due to pain and soft tissue restrictions), and urinary incontinence therapy (for bladder leakage) for those who qualify. If needed, special equipment can be ordered for patients to assist in their treatment and recovery.  Our wound care department staff is also available to assist with dressing changes and wound care needs.

If your physician recommends physical, occupational or speech therapy during your hospital stay, our therapy team is ready to assist your rehab needs.  Some familiar faces you might see during your stay include: Jenica Brown, Occupational Therapist, Jim Hanny, Speech Therapist, and Julie Johanning, Physical Therapist Assistant.  This same team is also located at the outpatient setting downtown at Sullivan Sports Fitness and Rehab on West Main Street in Sullivan.

Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital is committed to improving the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.  We want our communities to know that we are here for them through the entire spectrum of care.  Our commitment is to a patient centered care experience that takes place close to home.   Remember: You have a choice on where you do your therapy.  Keep us in mind for your rehab needs. We are close to home, we are Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital. Our rehab team strives to provide EXCELLENT care for the patients we serve.  We look forward to serving you!
